Welcome to The Sydney Morning Herald. Search BoxSection NavigationContent. PETER CUNDALL can well remember the inspiration that foreshadowed the course he would take in his eventful life - the fragrance of a briar rose that he squeezed as a three-year-old. Going outside in tears after an altercation with his mother, he had become curious about the object in front of him.

Today the television gardener has become a Member AM of the General Division of the Order of Australia. Cundall had a poverty-stricken but not unhappy childhood.

He was exposed to socialist ideals. Called up by the military in World War II, he served with the British Parachute Regiment in Europe and the Middle East. He took time when he could to visit gardens, especially after the war. In he inadvertently strayed in Yugoslavia, was arrested as a spy and thrown into a lice-infested cell for six months.

After his release he rejoined the British Army and served in the Middle East during the Palestine emergency, where he was at least able to see orange groves developed in desert conditions. After migrating to Australia in he joined the army and was sent to Korea, where he took notes on plants on the front line and was wounded by shrapnel.

To those who have agreed or disagreed, his reply has been along the lines of his sign-off on Gardening Australia: The former Socceroo Alex Tobin received more than his fair share of sporting awards during his playing days, but said it was extra special to be recognised for his work off the field. And it's perhaps a recognition of efforts off the park as much as on the park in terms of trying to help the game go forward.

A man who commanded Australian troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, Brigadier Paul Symon, has been honoured as an officer in the military division of the Order of Australia. Brigadier Symon's time commanding in the Middle East from November until last May followed posts in the Solomon Islands and East Timor.

Based in Baghdad, Brigadier Symon oversaw not only the Australians in Iraq but also the deployment of special forces troops in Afghanistan and preparations for the introduction of an army reconstruction team there.

However, his time in Baghdad was marred by the bungled repatriation of the body of Private Jacob Kovco and concerns about the removal of evidence from the scene before investigators arrived. Guido Belgiorno-Nettis, a businessman, has followed in his father's footsteps by receiving an Australia Day honour for developing big infrastructure projects across the country. The head of Transfield Holdings has been named a Member AM of the Order of Australia for service to the construction industry and the arts.

Transfield projects include the Sydney Harbour Tunnel, Melbourne's CityLink and Brisbane's Airtrain. Transfield was founded in the s by Guido's father, Franco Belgiorno-Nettis, who was appointed a Companion in the Order of Australia AC 10 years ago.

The award is also in recognition of Guido's support for the arts. A classical guitarist, he chairs the Australian Chamber Orchestra and is part of the Art Gallery of NSW president's council.

AMONG the young arty types on screen and behind the cameras of the Tropfest short film competition, Joy Hruby's films cannot help but stand out. She proudly points out that at 79 she is again the oldest entrant in the annual competition.

This year is her third year entering a film, but she has appeared in others in previous years. After more than half a century of involvement in the arts and entertainment industry, Mrs Hruby has been recognised with a Medal OAM of the Order of Australia in the general division. As well as her filmmaking forays, Mrs Hruby is a stalwart of community television. She has a studio at home, where she films and edits Joy's Worldepisodes of which have screened on TVS, channel 31, since Mrs Hruby started Studio J actors' agency innow run by Jan Vassella.

She has published a book, Dubbo Dazzlersabout her time entertaining soldiers in World War II and is adapting the story for a television series. Her passion for the entertainment industry influenced her children's career paths. Her daughter Anna is an actor who first appeared as Nell in Seven Little Australiansher son, Frank, is a focus puller and worked on Mission: Impossible II and The Thin Red Lineand her daughter Janette is a former film location caterer.

Her late husband, Denny, was a professional pianist. I've had a fantastic life. I love working with people. The former Labor premier John Bannon and the former Liberal premier John Olsen have been appointed Officers AO in the Order of Australia for services to parliament and politics. Mr Bannon quit as premier and treasurer in September after the state's biggest financial controversy, the State Bank collapse.

But he resigned in tears in October when a report found he lied to an inquiry into how the communications company Motorola was established in the state. He rejected the findings but quit, and the next year he became Australia's consul-general in Los Angeles - a position he held for three years before being appointed to the same position in New York, a job he now holds.

The freestyle aerialist Alisa Camplin and the slalom specialist Zali Steggall achieved more than expected in a country with little to no pedigree in winter sports. Today their contributions are acknowledged, both receiving a Medal OAM of the Order of Australia. Camplin emerged from the shadow of another Australian aerialist, Jacqui Cooper, unexpectedly winning gold at the Winter Olympics. Steggall was also a big event performer, in the alpine disciplines.

Her golden period in the slalom ran from toduring which time she had her first World Cup victory, became Australia's only Winter Olympics alpine medallist after a third at the Nagano Games, and won a world championship in Vail, Colorado.

Janet Holmes a Court is puzzled by how much time people spend wondering what it means to be an Australian at this time a year. The staunch republican, who has been made a Companion AC of the Order of Australia, says she hopes the nation will sever its ties to Britain.

Ms Holmes a Court is best known for turning around the flagging fortunes of her late husband's business, Heytesbury, after he died suddenly in These days she is more focused on being a patron of the arts in Western Australia, lobbying for free-to-air children's television and supporting victims of torture and trauma. Michael L'Estrange believes years as a policy wonk has turned out to be the perfect grounding to become Australia's top diplomat.

He took up the job as secretary at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade only days after the devastating Boxing Day tsunami.

Since then, thousands of Australians have been caught up in natural disasters, terrorist attacks and political crises overseas. The former Rhodes scholar came to foreign affairs after five years as Australia's high commissioner to the United Kingdom. Mr L'Estrange, 54, was today appointed an Officer AO in the Order of Australia in recognition of his service to public policy and international relations. The tennis great and Perth evangelical church founder Margaret Court has been lauded for her contributions to sport and pastoral care.

Known to her Perth flock as Pastor Margaret, the founder of the Christian Victory Life Centre in Perth has been made an Officer AO of the Order of Australia for her services to tennis as a player and as a mentor to junior female elite competitors. She has also been recognised for her contributions to the communities of Australia and Sri Lanka for initiating a range of pastoral care, social support and emergency accommodation projects.

Court remains one of Australia's most well known tennis players, after a stellar career in which she won a record 62 grand slam titles, including 24 singles, 19 doubles and 19 mixed doubles. She is less well known for her pastoral work and care for Sri Lankan survivors of the tsunami that devastated Asia just a little more than two years ago killing more thanpeople.

Benjamin Ming Tung Chow, 60, awarded an officer AO in the General Division of the Order of Australia, has been active in multicultural issues since he was a student. Born in Shanghai, he spent his early years in Hong Kong before arriving in Australia in to study at Sydney's Waverley College.

After graduating in civil engineering from the University of Sydney he joined the Hooker Corporation as a trainee project manager. Mr Chow says that while he does not think racism is a big problem, he believes community relationships need constant nurturing.

He has been the driving force behind annual Harmony Day celebrations that highlight cultural diversity and aim to eliminate racism and discrimination. The artistic director of Company B Belvoir, named an Officer AO in the General Division of the Order of Australia, will be too busy working on the script for the play Exit the Kingstarring Geoffrey Rush.

Armfield is hunkered down with Rush on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria translating Eugene Ionesco's script before the play opens at Melbourne's Malthouse Theatre in March. It comes to the Belvoir St Theatre in June. The honour is another jewel in an amazing year for the director. Company B's production of Keating!

Snugglepot and Cuddlepie and Little Ragged Blossoma musical directed by Armfield based on the May Gibbs stories, has had extra shows added to its Sydney Festival season to meet demand. One dark spot has been the death of his mother, Nita, during rehearsals for Snugglepot and Cuddlepieand the opening-night performance was dedicated to her memory.

Armfield also turned to film last year with Candystarring Heath Ledger, and won an Australian Film Institute award, with Luke Davies, for best adapted screenplay.
